Claude Dashboards and Motion Launched in Beta. What They Do, Who Gets Them, and What Ends December 14.

Anthropic's Oct 8 launch from its own docs: what Dashboards and Motion do, who gets each, how to use them, what ends December 14, and what to check before connecting data.

Contents

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion, both in beta. The same day it took Claude Docs, Slides, and Design out of beta and set December 14, 2026 as the closing date for the standalone Claude Design site at claude.ai/design.

This note is built from Anthropic's launch article, help center guides and pricing page, read on October 8 and 9, 2026. We did not test the products, so how they behave is what Anthropic's pages say. Reuters and The New Stack relay the announcement; we treat them as consistent with it, not as a separate test. "Our read" marks EP's opinion.

#What launched

Dashboards. You ask a question about your company's data and Claude builds a dashboard. Per Anthropic's help center, "Claude writes a SQL query for each chart and runs it against your data source. Each chart shows its query, so you can see exactly what it's counting, along with when its data was last refreshed." Anthropic scopes it to "quick, exploratory questions" and says "Dashboards work alongside your BI and analytics tools."

Motion. Per Anthropic's Motion guide, "Claude builds it from your prompt as code that animates the text, charts, shapes, and images in it, and it plays like a short video." The launch article adds that it "doesn't use a video generation model, so there's no generated footage and no AI-generated people." You export an MP4. The launch article says your team and Claude can work on the same doc, deck, design, or dashboard, but we found no documented step that feeds a dashboard into Motion, so test that path before promising it.

Docs, Slides, and Design. Anthropic says they are "out of beta and available on every plan, including Free."

The standalone Design site. Claude Design started at claude.ai/design on April 17, 2026, as a research preview for paid plans. Since September 16, Design also works inside every Claude conversation. Anthropic's reason for closing the standalone site: "Running two versions slows down fixes for both, so we're folding the standalone site into Claude."

From Anthropic's pricing page and the guides, as fetched October 9. Pro is $17 a month with an annual subscription ($200 billed up front), or $20 billed monthly. Team is for teams of 2 to 150, with a standard seat at $20 per seat per month billed annually or $25 monthly.

"Every plan" comes with conditions:

  • Usage limits apply, Free included. Docs, Dashboards and Motion count toward your plan's usage limits "like the rest of your work with Claude," and longer or more complex animations use more.
  • Enterprise turns on October 15. Docs, Slides and Design turn on by default that day, and the admin guide says: "Turn any of them off before then if you don't want them on." Dashboards and Motion stay off on Enterprise until an owner turns them on.
  • Docs sharing differs by plan. The Docs guide says "Docs can't be shared by email invitation on any plan" and "Opening a shared doc requires a Claude account." Free, Pro and Max: "Share with anyone who has the link." Anthropic's Share artifacts guide lists link sharing from Pro up; test it on Free before you rely on it. Team and Enterprise: "Docs can't be shared outside your organization yet."
  • Zero data retention (ZDR) organizations. Anthropic says "Organizations with zero data retention (ZDR) can't turn on artifacts, so they can't migrate." All five tools are built from artifact templates, so our reading is that a ZDR organization does not get them.

#How to use Dashboards

You need Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise; on Enterprise an owner turns it on in Organization settings > Artifacts.

  1. Connect your data. The guide lists "A data warehouse," with examples "such as Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, or Snowflake," and "Other apps you've connected to Claude," with Salesforce as its example.
  2. Ask. In any chat, for example "Build a dashboard of this quarter's revenue by region." Or choose Output, then Dashboards, or open the Artifacts tab and pick a template. Anthropic's tip: "Say what you want to know, not just what to chart."
  3. Check the query. "Open a chart's query to see how Claude got the number. If it isn't counting what you meant, tell Claude what to change."
  4. Share on purpose. "Dashboards start private to you." Click Share. To go deeper, send it to another analytics tool; the launch article lists the destinations that are live and those coming soon.

#How to use Motion

You need Team (on by default) or Enterprise (an owner turns it on). Pro and Max do not get Motion.

  1. Ask. In any chat, for example "Turn this quarterly report into a 30-second explainer for our all-hands." Or choose Output, then Motion, or pick a Motion template in the Artifacts tab.
  2. Brief it. "Say who will watch it, where it will play, and roughly how long it should be. Attach the report, data, or images you want Claude to use, so the animation is built from your own content."
  3. Edit. Ask in chat ("Slow down the second scene") or "Adjust the animation yourself in the editor."
  4. Export. Click Export and choose MP4. "Animations start private to you." To finish elsewhere, the launch article lists Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, invideo, Luma AI and Runway, with Canva and Captions coming soon.

#Before December 14: a checklist

The standalone site keeps working until it closes on December 14, 2026; after that, claude.ai/design takes you to Claude. The consequence is in one line of Anthropic's migration guide: "Your originals keep working in the standalone version until it closes on December 14, 2026. After that, they're deleted, per our data retention practices."

  1. Find who uses the standalone site. Any plan.
  2. Read the sharing warning first. "Published design systems that aren't private will be shared with everyone in your organization and appear in their design system menu." On individual plans, nothing is shared. Anyone who can use Claude Design can start the migration, not just owners, and one migration brings over every design system in the organization, including other people's. Review what is published, and decide who starts it, before step 3.
  3. Owners on Team and Enterprise: check settings. Turn on "Cloud code execution and file creation" in Organization settings > Capabilities first. Then, in Organization settings > Artifacts, confirm Artifacts is on, and under Templates check the three templates Design systems, Design and Slides. The migration guide lists them as on for Team and off for Enterprise; once they are on, anyone who can use Claude Design can start the migration, so do step 2 first. On Enterprise with custom roles, each role needs the matching permissions, and a design system cannot migrate if its owner's role lacks design systems.
  4. Enterprise owners: decide before October 15, when Docs, Slides and Design turn on by default.
  5. Migrate design systems. On the Artifacts page in Claude, click "Migrate team design systems," then "Migrate." The guide says "On individual plans, there's no confirmation step, and the migration starts right away." Check what is listed under "Couldn't be migrated." Empty design systems and ones built from a built-in starter theme are not migrated. Originals stay unchanged until closure.
  6. Edit by asking Claude, for now. The guide says "you can't edit it yourself on its page yet." Editors see "Migrated from the standalone version. Ask Claude to make changes." Owners can set a default design system.
  7. Handle projects separately. Anthropic says "You don't need to do anything with your projects yet," and "More details about moving your projects to Claude are coming soon." No project migration is documented today, and originals are deleted after closure, so download any project you need. One at a time: open it in the standalone version, click "Share," choose "Project HTML" (for a slide deck, "More formats and apps"), keep "Project archive" selected, and click "Export." It is a free .zip; there is no bulk download.
  8. Save chats and comments. They stay behind and are deleted after closure. Anthropic says "Save anything you need from your chats and comments before the standalone version closes." The migration guide documents only the project archive. The Design guide documents project exports as .zip, PDF, PPTX, Google Slides and standalone HTML. We found no documented export for chats or comments, so copy by hand what matters.
  9. Replace public links. "Public links to projects in the standalone version will no longer work after it closes."
  10. ZDR organizations: cannot migrate; "download your projects before the standalone version closes."
  11. Check the guide again before the date for the project details.

#Before a dashboard touches company data

Our read: the account you connect is the policy. What the sources say, mostly the connectors guide and the admin guide:

  • Permissions follow the connection. "Claude inherits each person's permissions from the connected service." The exception: "Custom connectors that use a shared credential reach whatever that credential can access." "Each user connects their own apps, even in a shared artifact." Where you control the database, give each person a read-only role scoped to the tables a dashboard needs, and keep shared credentials away from sensitive data.
  • Artifacts can write. The artifacts guide says they "can connect to the apps you've connected to Claude, so they can read from and write to tools like Asana, Google Calendar, and Slack," and "Connector tools that need approval for each action aren't available to artifacts." The admin guide says an owner can turn Enable artifact connectors on or off for the whole organization (Organization settings > Capabilities, under Visuals), but "you can't limit which apps artifacts can reach." A read-only role limits what the database connection can do.
  • Sharing has rules. The launch article lets you share dashboards outside your organization "if your admin allows it." The Share artifacts guide says "Artifacts that connect to your apps or use Claude" cannot use the "Anyone with the link" option, and: "An artifact that pulls from connected apps uses the viewer's connections, not yours. If a viewer can't access a data source, that part of the artifact shows an error instead of your data." For outside invitees, "Parts of the artifact that use Claude or your connectors don't work for them." The admin guide adds "People need a Claude account to open any artifact except a legacy artifact published from chat." We read a warehouse connection as a connected app; the sources do not say so outright, so test it.
  • Plan terms differ. On the pricing page, Free, Pro and Max show "No" for single sign-on, audit logs and admin controls for connectors, and "Opt-out" for model training. Team and Enterprise show "None by default" for model training; audit logs are "No" on Team and "Yes" on Enterprise. Read the "More information" behind that line first.
  • Out of bounds. The admin guide says Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards and Motion "aren't covered under your Business Associate Agreement (BAA), so keep protected health information (PHI) out of them."

#What it means

For a small or mid-size business. The first question is where your numbers live. Anthropic's guide names warehouses and connected apps; if yours are in accounting software, a spreadsheet or a point-of-sale system, check for a connector and run one real question through first. Then pilot the definition, not the chart: pick a question you answer by hand each week, open every query, and compare each figure to the number you trust. Motion is "built for explaining your own work," and it needs Team or Enterprise. Two standard Team seats, the minimum, cost $40 a month at the annual per-seat price (billed annually) or $50 billed monthly.

For teams that build agents for clients. Our read:

  • Treat the connection as a design decision, and tell the client which account a dashboard ran as.
  • If your safety design relies on a person approving each write, it cannot live inside an artifact.
  • Viewers need Claude accounts, connected-app artifacts cannot use a public link, and viewers use their own connections, so an outside invitee sees an error where connected data would be. Do not promise a client a live dashboard on a link.
  • Anthropic's line is "Claude makes the first version, and you decide what gets shared." Write down who opens the queries, who signs off the definitions, and who may share.
  • If you built design systems for a client in the standalone site, run the checklist above before December 14.

#What it points to

  • One place for what Claude makes. On September 16, Anthropic wrote "So we stopped making you choose" and "What Claude makes doesn't need its own place either." Our read: avoid building a process that depends on a separate address.
  • Others are building the same thing. OpenAI's page, dated September 10, 2026, describes a Data agent that "investigates what changed, and builds interactive dashboards you can share." The New Stack, which discloses that its owner Insight Partners invests in OpenAI, Anthropic, ClickHouse and Databricks, wrote that "the overall direction is essentially the same."

The tools are new. The question that decides whether they help or hurt is an old one: who is allowed to see which number, and who checked it.
